Local arborist was about to remove an old birch tree that had been following life on a North Karelian farm for decades. “Would you be interested?”

Sure we were, when we saw the shape of the tree trunk. If we had tried to force it into traditional form and sawn straight planks out of it, first, it would have caused a massive material loss, and second, ruined the whole soul of the tree. The trunk was wavy – so the width varied a lot, and the pieces had to be sawn as wide as possible, honoring the natural shape.

And when we saw the exceptionally beautiful grain pattern, we were even more convinced.

We got an idea of turning it into a sofa table where we would embed thick planks onto each other – so that each of them gets to shine as individuals, while at the same time forming an entity that plays with different layers.

The 5 centimeter thick, 80 * 120 centimeter pieces were then fitted together. We even left some birch bark on them to add some contrast. The leg is a T-shape, robust structure that is made from the same material. Then just a thin layer of oil wax to bring a gentle sheer that does not suffocate the grain figures.
