Elegant Wooden Sofa

The detailed joints and the beautiful grain of ash wood really show in this vintage style wood-framed sofa that converts into a bed.

Our customer was looking for a wood-framed sofa to match their 40-50’s style furniture – something that is beautiful and practical at the same time. They wanted the sofa frame to be an elegant structure itself – so that it could be visible under the mattress and cushions. The sofa had to be high enough so it is easy to stand up and to sit in a good posture – super soft sofas for slouching are a different thing.

So we wanted to make the design as airy as possible, with nice curves. We combined the 40-50’s style tapered leg structure and bed-like frame with more modern-looking curved backrest and armrests. The curves of the backrest and the armrests are attached with a very special joint: in the corner there is a lap joint where the pegs show on the surface.

We chose ash as the material because of its light color and vivid grain figures. First we applied a layer of oil that maintains the natural color of the wood and then we waxed it with clear wax, as we wanted to keep the ash as natural-looking as possible.

The mattress and cushions were made by a local upholsterer Verhoilijamestari Staffan. The secret of the firm mattress is three-layered structure where the upper and bottom layers are softer and the middle layer firmer foam rubber. Also the cushions were made so that they maintain their form and keep in place easily. The customer chose the dark gray fabric from the collection of the Finnish Annala Oy and it complements nicely the light tones of the ash.

We were delighted to hear that the customer was happy with the result; that we managed to create a truly elegant piece of furniture. Also based on the test sitting and napping, the sofa serves its purpose as well 🙂
